Schedule your Child's Back-to-School Physicals Now!
The Importance of a School Physical
It is important to receive a complete examination on a yearly basis. In fact, The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends an annual check-up for children from age two to 18. The purpose of these physicals is to ensure that the student is able to participate in the school program, and that the school community is protected from the spread of infectious disease.
How does it Work
An annual physical checks your child's growth and development. It will also assess weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, vision, hearing, and physical, or social health concerns.
When to schedule a School Physical
Some schools require that students complete a physical exam before the beginning of each school year, while many states require that all have proof of up-to-date immunizations. Here are some examples in which a school requires a physical:
- Transfer students - It is common that transfer students are required to show proof of up-to-date immunizations. Since many states have different immunization requirements, transfer students must often receive additional shots in order to begin school.
- Sports - Students must complete a physical exam before participating in any school sports. Sport physicals identify any health issues that might put a student at risk during practice or competition.
- Kindergarten - Most schools require that students have a physical examination within six months prior to beginning kindergarten.
- 7th grade - Most schools require that all students complete a physical and get up-to-date immunizations before entering the 7th grade.
Great Time to Update Vaccinations
The annual visit is a great time to update immunizations. Although most children receive their basic immunizations before age two, other immunizations such as measles, tetanus, and mumps require shots in later years. New immunizations may have been introduced since your child was last immunized such as Hepatitis A series, the chicken pox vaccine and Prevnar, which may help reduce ear infections. Ensuring that your child receives these vaccines, will optimize protection against many diseases.
At CheckUps, our certified medical staff will ensure that all immunizations are up-to-date and administer shots if necessary. We recommend a physical every year, so beat the back-to-school rush and visit us for a school physical today!
